PFLAG Florence OR
PFLAG Florence, which has been an active chapter of the national organization since October 2011, grew out of a standing-room-only community interest meeting at the Siuslaw Public Library. Since its inception, PFLAG Florence has conducted regular monthly meetings, sponsored educational programs, social events, and community outreach in public spaces, and participated in civic and community events.
It has offered financial and other support to the Siuslaw High School Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) over the years, and several students have served on the PFLAG board.
We meet at 6 p.m. on the second Monday of the month, usually in the Fellowship Hall of Florence United Methodist Church, named for a prominent church and community leader, the late Tedd Powell, who was gay. Many members of Florence UMC, a staunch ally officially recognized by the denomination as a reconciling church, have been on the board of PFLAG Florence over the years.
PFLAG Florence is a member of the Florence Area Community Coalition and the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce.
Provide Support – PFLAG facilitates separate monthly in-person and online support groups, as well as a weekly support group for parents and allies of transgender folks. We also provide periodic programs for special topics and events.
Offer Education – Each month, as part of our support groups, we provide a different education topic relevant to the time of year (back-to-school, coming out, etc.). For the parents / allies of transgender folks, we provide a faith-based discussion one week, book club the next week, sharing our stories, and trans-specific education topics. We also do periodic special programs like suicide prevention training, name change clinic, and others.
Advocate – PFLAG strives to partner with other local and National organizations to educate key decision-makers about the issues that affect our loved ones and families, and to teach others how to use their voices to amplify our efforts toward a more equitable, and just world for the LGBTQ+ community.
